The Job

Our Principal Java Developers play a vital role in the day to day running of the squad. They’re on hand to solve difficult technical problems whilst keeping in mind user experience, performance, quality and security aspects. They devise elegant and creative solutions to challenging technical problems. Highlighting issues with existing architecture and code, and cleaning it up. They also work with the wider group of technical leads and developers to promote great software design and quality. We're looking for Principal Java Developers to join us. 

Here at Auto Trader UK, we work in tribes and squads. Each tribe focuses on a different customer group, product or service which in turn determines the technologies used in the squad. Our cross functional squads are typically made up of product and delivery leads, developers (Java/JavaScript/Python), UX designers, test and data analysts. Working in a fast paced, Agile environment means collaboration is key.

We’re looking for technical leaders with an excellent understanding and working knowledge of Java and the JVM. A deep architectural understanding of web applications and RESTful services is essential. Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as Angular or ReactJS would be extremely helpful too. We’re also looking for someone with knowledge of open source libraries, tools and frameworks, e.g. logging, test, build. Excitement for the latest trends in application design, combined with a pragmatic approach to consistency and simplicity. Experience with Software development methodologies like XP, Scrum, Kanban, and TDD, and an interest to learn more about new languages and frameworks.

We offer a salary between £50,000 - £65,000 and a great flexible benefits package including 25 days’ holiday and pension. You’re given the choice of a Mac or PC and as much free tea, coffee and fresh fruit as you like. We’re centrally located in Manchester city centre.
