Looking for a new job takes time, energy and optimism. The last thing anyone wants is to discover that an opportunity isn't genuine.
Whether you're actively searching, responding to a recruiter on LinkedIn, or exploring opportunities that land in your inbox, there are more ways than ever to connect with employers.
Unfortunately, there are also more opportunities for scammers to target job seekers. In a recent study by Action Fraud, reports of job and recruitment scams in the UK increased by more than 130%. Recruitment scams have become increasingly sophisticated. Some fraudsters create fake job adverts, impersonate recruiters, or even pose as well-known companies to collect personal information and financial details.
At Autotrader, protecting candidates is important to us. While scammers can be convincing, there are some simple ways to spot the warning signs and stay safe throughout your job search.

While every situation is different, there are some warning signs worth paying attention to:
If something feels unusual, take a step back and verify the opportunity before sharing any information.

Five quick checks can help protect you during your search:
1. Verify opportunities through official channels
If you're approached about a role, visit the employer's careers site directly rather than clicking links in messages. Checking whether the role is listed is often the quickest way to confirm it's genuine.
2. Check who's contacting you
LinkedIn can help verify recruiters and employees. Look for an established profile, employment history and activity that aligns with the company they represent. As scammers can impersonate genuine employees, it's also worth checking the company's website or other official channels.
At Autotrader, our recruitment team members have a LinkedIn verification badge that indicates our identity and workplace is confirmed.
3. Don't rush
Scammers often create a sense of urgency to discourage questions. A legitimate employer will understand if you want to verify information before moving forward.
4. Protect your personal information
Be cautious when sharing personal details, identification documents or banking information. Genuine employers won't ask for sensitive information before it's appropriate in the recruitment process.
5. Apply directly if possible
Where possible, apply through the company's official careers site instead of using automated application tools or browser extensions. These tools can occasionally submit inaccurate information, which may affect your application.

Every organisation hires differently, but there are some things that will always be true when you're applying for a role at Autotrader.
All our vacancies are advertised through official channels
The best place to find our job opportunities is our careers site. We also advertise roles through trusted platforms, including LinkedIn and, from time to time, job boards such as Indeed or Totaljobs.
If you spot a vacancy advertised elsewhere that claims to be from Autotrader, it's good practice to cross-check it against our careers site. If you can't find the role advertised there, it could be an older vacancy that has already closed or, in some cases, a scam.
When viewing vacancies on external platforms, always look carefully at the company branding, logo, and profile details to confirm you're interacting with a genuine employer. Always apply via our official careers site.
We have a structured recruitment process
Our hiring process includes conversations with real people.
This will involve an initial conversation, virtual interviews and in-person assessments in one of our offices. We'll always explain what to expect and keep you informed throughout the process.
We don't offer jobs after a few messages online, and we don't hire exclusively through chat platforms.
Our recruiters use official Autotrader email addresses
Any email communication from our recruitment team will end in @autotrader.co.uk.
If you're unsure whether a message is genuinely from us, contact our recruitment team to verify. If you're contacted through LinkedIn, look for the verification badge, check the profile's employment history and confirm the individual is genuinely connected to Autotrader.
We sometimes work with recruitment agencies
For some vacancies, we work with a small number of trusted recruitment agency partners.
If you're approached by an agency claiming to be recruiting on behalf of Autotrader and you're unsure whether the opportunity is genuine, please contact us directly. We'll be happy to confirm whether the agency is authorised to represent us.
If you're unsure
If an opportunity claiming to be from Autotrader doesn't feel right, verify it before taking the next step.
If you’re unsure or if you believe someone is claiming to represent Autotrader and attempting to scam you, you can always contact our recruitment team directly at recruitment@autotrader.co.uk.
Job hunting is a big step, and it should feel exciting, not worrying. By knowing what to look out for, you can focus on finding the right opportunity with confidence.
